Zagazig is the capital of Sharqia, and it has Zagazig University and many colleges affiliated with Al-Azhar University. It is considered one of the largest cities in the Delta region and is located on the Moss Canal, the Ismailia Canal, and also the Al-Muizz Canal.

One of the most famous landmarks in the city is the Grand Mosque, which Muhammad Ali Pasha ordered to be built in the Ottoman style. It was named the Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha, referring to Muhammad Ali who ordered its construction in front of the Nine Barrages.
