Sinai is known as the Land of Turquoise; it is a desert peninsula with a triangular shape located in Western Asia, as well as in the northeastern part of the Arab Republic of Egypt. It is the only region in Egypt that geographically belongs to the continent of Asia.
Its area reached about 60,088 square kilometers, representing about 6% of Egypt's total area. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Suez to the east; in the east, it borders Palestine and the Gulf of Aqaba; to the south lies the Red Sea. Thus, it serves as a link between the continents of Africa and Asia.
Its population has reached about one million and four hundred thousand people. Administratively, the Sinai Peninsula is divided into North Sinai Governorate, South Sinai Governorate, Port Fouad city that belongs to Port Said Governorate, the Qantara City Center in the East affiliated to Ismailia Governorate, and the Ganayen suburb which belongs to Suez Governorate. It encompasses many remarkable landmarks, as Sinai contains numerous resorts and natural reserves in addition to religious sites, most notably Sharm El-Sheikh, Dahab, Ras Sudr, Taba, and Nuweiba, Ras Muhammad Nature Reserve, Nabq Nature Reserve, Taba Reserve, as well as Saint Catherine's Monastery, Moses' Bath, Pharaoh's Bath, and, of course, Mount Sinai, the mountain where Moses spoke to God and received the Ten Commandments.
There is no information about the meaning of its name, but some have attributed the meaning of Sinai to "stone" due to its many mountains, while others believe that its name in ancient hieroglyphics is Tosherit, meaning the land of barrenness and wilderness, and it was also known in the Torah as Horeb, meaning desolation.
However, it is generally agreed to call it Sinai. The relics in Sinai indicate the existence of an old route named Horus, which started from Port Said city to Al-Arish city. Sinai has witnessed a number of significant historical events, most notably the arrival of the First Crusade, the inauguration ceremony of the Suez Canal in 1869, and the Arab-Israeli conflict through the tripartite aggression in 1956, the June War of 1967, and then the October War of 1973.
