The Sharqia Governorate in Egypt is considered the third largest governorate in terms of population, with an area of about 4,911 km2 and a population of about 8,003,165 million people. The governorate has historical significance as it was the eastern gateway to Egypt. Additionally, it was the 12th province among the provinces of Lower Egypt, with its capital being (Bubastis). It is also noteworthy that in ancient times, it was the capital of Egypt.
The name "Sharqia" was given during the Fatimid era, and before that, it was divided into small districts, each functioning independently. It was then unified to become Sharqia because it is located in the eastern part of Lower Egypt.
Sharqia occupies a unique position among the governorates in the eastern delta due to its location. It faces the initial shocks in the event of an invasion from the east, owing to its position east of the delta. It is also a convergence point for all transportation routes among the governorates of Ismailia, Port Said, Cairo, Gharbia, as well as Dakahlia and Qalyubia.
The governorate is also rich in various resources, whether archaeological or touristic sites, with around one hundred and twenty archaeological sites, the most famous being Tell Basta and San el-Hagar.
In the Husseiniya area, there is what was known in ancient times as San el-Hagar, which is about 75 km from Zagazig and about 130 km from Cairo. It was called (Tanis) during the Greek period in Egypt, whereas in the Pharaonic era it was called (Djanet) and was the capital during the 21st and 23rd dynasties.
Tanis is considered the shortest in Lower Egypt as it includes massive stone monuments and the largest temple in Lower Egypt, which is replete with various plaques and statues of different shapes and sizes. Additionally, there is a large granite gate with a statue of Ramses II with his wife Meryetamun, as well as a Sphinx statue. There is also the sacred lake dating back to 1070 BC.
In Sharqia, there is the Tell Basta Museum in the city of Zagazig. Tell Basta was an important religious center, and due to its location at Egypt's eastern entrance, it resisted incoming groups through Sinai and witnessed conquerors and invaders.
Notable figures from Sharqia include Ibrahim Desouki Abaza, a former politician and minister, Ahmad Orabi, leader of the Orabi Revolution, Talaat Harb, founder of modern Egyptian economy, and Sayed Marai Nasr, who was the first Minister of Agrarian Reform in 1957.
