Ras Tanura is located in the east of Saudi Arabia. It is a peninsula surrounded by water coming from the Arabian Gulf on about three sides, and it is about 70 km away from Dammam, which is considered the administrative capital in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom. Its importance emerged from housing some of the largest oil refineries, in addition to having two ports for shipping oil and gas plants producing sulfur.
Additionally, it has the largest type of steam power station in the Middle East, along with the presence of the Qatif and Abu Safah fields.
On the other hand, most of the residents work at Aramco and the electricity company, as well as at SABIC, alongside some working in education. It is also the birthplace of the writer Saleh Mohsen Fahd, who authored several books on the history and social life of the cities in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom.
Some of its residents also work in the military, agriculture, and fishing, as well as in trade, industry, and real estate. It also has Ras Tanura General Hospital with a capacity of 50 beds, and two health centers for primary health care located in the middle of the province within Al Fayhaa neighborhood and in the north in Al Qurtuba neighborhood, along with a quarantine center, a Red Crescent center, and a clinic.
The area is also known for its abundance of water springs, most notably Ain Rahima located in Ibn Al-Hadrami Park for the primary level, Ain Sha’ab, Al-Kheshkari, in addition to Ain Al-Rabrab, and Ain the waterfront.
One of the most distinctive features of the province is a sandy beach that extends about five kilometers in the east of the province, in addition to its location free from residential cities and the mixture of the sea with green areas, which made this beach distinctive in the Eastern Province. The beach is known as Al-Najma.
Ras Tanura is also distinguished by having one of the largest refineries in Saudi Arabia, established in 1949. It has gradually increased in capacity and refining capabilities to reach about 525,000 barrels per day, making it the largest refinery in the entire Middle East, which added significant weight to the place.
