The city of Qena is the capital of Qena Governorate and consists of 9 cities, 41 main villages, 111 affiliated villages, and 1466 hamlets and estates. Qena is located in Upper Egypt, and its area is approximately 10,798 square kilometers. Its population in the 2021 census was about 3,520,179 people. It is bordered by the "Sohag Governorate" to the north, "Luxor" to the south, the Red Sea to the east, and the New Valley Governorate to the west.
Qena was called "Shabt" during the Pharaonic era, "Caenopolis" during the Greek era, "Maximianopolis" during the Roman era, and "Qune" or "Kone" during the Coptic era. After Amr ibn al-As conquered Egypt, it was named "Aqueni", from which the current name Qena is derived. The meaning of Qena in Arabic is "embracing", referring to its location relative to the Nile River, as it is the city embracing the Nile River.
Qena is famous for its numerous diverse historical landmarks from different historical epochs, including Coptic and Islamic relics. It hosts a large number of historical mosques and monasteries. Among its most famous mosques are the Abdul Rahim al-Qenawi Mosque and the al-Omari Mosque in the city of Qus. Important monasteries include the Monastery of the Archangel Michael in Nagada, the Monastery of the Cross, and the Anba Shenouda Monastery.
It also contains many ancient Pharaonic relics, such as the Dendera Temple, Qus Temple, and the Nag Hammadi Archaeological Area, which includes many archaeological sites, the most important of which are the Monastery of Anba Polaamon, the Nag Hammadi Barrages, and the Karnak area.
Among the most famous industries in Qena are pottery making, the farka industry—a craft inherited from the Pharaohs using a handloom to make silk and linen shawls—ceramic making, Al-Nahda Cement manufacturing, wood carving, and black honey production, making Qena the capital of handicraft and artisanal industries.
As for the population of Qena, it predominantly has a tribal composition with major tribes such as (the Arabs, the Hawara, the Ashraf, and the Emara). The residents celebrate their national day on the third of March each year in commemoration of the victory of Baroud village against the French campaign in 1799 AD.
