Mit Ghamr is one of the cities of the Arab Republic of Egypt, located south of Dakahlia Governorate. The city is the administrative capital of the Mit Ghamr center. The area of Mit Ghamr is approximately 18612 square kilometers.
The original name of Mit Ghamr is "Minyat Ghamr" and it was mentioned in the book "Nuzhat al-Mushtaq": where it was said that it is one of the villages that owns many markets and commercial centers. It was also mentioned in other books such as: (Tuhfat al-Irshad), (Qawanin Ibn Mamati), (Taj al-Arus). It was mentioned along with the village of (Minyat Hamad) and was known at that time as (Minyati Ghamr wa Hamad). The name of Minyat Hamad was associated with it due to their shared land and residence.
In the Ottoman era, Mit Ghamr was called "Minyat Ghamr and Kafr al-Batal". This naming was due to its association with Prince Hamad who was nicknamed Al-Batal (The Hero). This prince left a mosque in his name, which still exists in Mit Ghamr, known as "Prince Hamad Mosque". The name "Minyat Ghamr and Kafr al-Batal" continued until 1228, after which Kafr al-Batal was separated and it became known as "Mit Ghamr".
Mit Ghamr is famous for its aluminum industry, producing about 70% of Egypt's total aluminum production. Besides, it is well-known for the production of building materials such as: clay bricks, tiles, hinges, and locksets among other industries.
Mit Ghamr has a strategic location as it is situated on the road connecting Damietta and Dakahlia Governorates with Cairo Governorate. Additionally, it has a modern transportation network, and there is also a railway line connecting it with Sharqia, Gharbeya, and other governorates.
One of the most famous landmarks in Mit Ghamr is the Gamry Mosque and its famous minaret, dating back to the Mamluk era. This minaret is uniquely designed, resembling the minaret of the Indian Corner in Cairo, which also dates back to the Mamluk era. The mosque has faced many destruction factors, and it is currently being renovated and rebuilt.
The population of Mit Ghamr is about 900,000 people. The residents work in industry, trade, and agriculture. The city is also characterized by its fertile soil as it lies between two water bodies: the Nile River to the west and the Damietta Branch to the east. Some of the most famous crops grown there include corn and rice, as well as a variety of fruits and vegetables.
