Medina is considered one of the most important administrative cities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, located in the west of the kingdom. Prince Mohammed bin Salman governs it. It ranks third in terms of area, covering an area of 150 square kilometers, and its population reached about 2,137,983 people according to the 2022 statistics.
Among the most important historical events witnessed by Medina are: the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions to it after being harmed by Quraysh in the year 1 AH, corresponding to 622 AD. The city was honored with the descent of revelation upon our Prophet Muhammad within it, and thus it is considered the best place on earth after Mecca.
Medina was called "Yathrib" before the advent of Islam, named after Yathrib bin Qaenah. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) migrated to it, he disliked this name because it derived from "tharb" meaning corruption, or "tathreeb" meaning change. He gave it several names: (Al-Madina, Taba, and Taybah). It is said that the reason for these names is the purity of the city's soil and the goodness of its inhabitants.
Medina holds great religious significance because it contains the Prophet's Mosque, which millions of Muslims visit annually from around the world. Additionally, the city holds a notable place in the hearts of all Muslims as it houses the tomb of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Also buried there are Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq and Omar Ibn Al-Khattab beside the Prophet (peace be upon him), along with many companions' graves (may Allah be pleased with them).
Medina boasts a distinctive location as it is situated in the middle of Islamic countries, and it lies on the international caravan route that connects the south of the Arabian Peninsula with the Levant. This route is also characterized by its fertile soil and its many water sources.
Among the most famous mosques in Medina are the Quba Mosque, the Mosque of the Two Qiblas (Masjid al-Qiblatayn), the Dhu al-Hulayfah Mosque, the Banner Mosque (Masjid al-Rayah), the Banu Dinar Mosque, and the Al-Asbah Mosque.
Mining is one of the prominent economic activities in Medina since the city contains one of the most important gold mines in the kingdom. Additionally, the city has various other economic activities such as agriculture, industry, fishing, and tourism, especially during the Hajj and Umrah season.
