Luxor Governorate is one of the most important governorates of the Arab Republic of Egypt, due to its possession of one-third of the world's antiquities. Luxor city is 670 kilometers away from Cairo and 220 kilometers away from Aswan Governorate. Safaga Port is considered its closest seaport.
Luxor covers an area of about 416 square kilometers, bordering Qena to the north, Aswan to the south, the Red Sea to the east, and the New Valley to the west. Its population reaches 414.3 thousand according to the 2020 population census.
Luxor city has been known by many names throughout different historical eras. Initially, it was called the city of (Waset), then the Romans called it Thebes. The Greek poet Homer named it the city of a hundred gates. Later, it was dubbed the City of the Sun, the City of Light, and the City of the Scepter. After the conquest of Egypt by Amr ibn al-As, it was named Luxor, due to the large number of pharaonic palaces it contained.
The pharaonic rulers of Egypt took Luxor as their capital, as it was founded during the era of the Fourth Dynasty. Therefore, Luxor has many pharaonic monuments, the most famous of which is the Luxor Temple built for the worship of the god Amun, with statues of Ramses II nearby, and the Karnak Temple, which is distinguished by its large area of 200 acres, containing statues of the god Amun and his family, and a road connecting the two temples called the Avenue of Sphinxes.
Luxor also houses the Luxor Museum, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut built during her reign, the Ramesseum Temple, the Medinet Habu Temple, the Temple of Remembrance, the Esna Temple, and Deir el-Medina, in addition to the Sacred Lake which contains a large number of statues from the era of King Amenhotep III.
Luxor also includes the tombs of the Valley of the Kings and Queens, the most famous of which are the tomb of Ramses III, the tomb of Seti, and the tomb of Tutankhamun.
Among the most important modern tourist attractions in Luxor city are the New Qurna Village, the Nubian House, the Leadership Preparation Center, the Cultural Center, and the Egypt Public Library. It also has a political information center.
Additionally, Luxor is known for its mild climate, especially in winter, attracting tourists from all over the world to enjoy the weather and its monuments.
