Ismailia is a coastal city with an area of about 5066 km², and a population of 1,432,323 people, in addition to seven centers, three districts, and a number of villages, farms, and various hamlets exceeding a thousand villages.
As for the centers, they are: Ismailia, which is the capital, then Tal El Kebeer, Abu Suwayr Center, in addition to New Qassaseen and also Fayed. Ismailia was built on the northwestern bank of Lake Timsah, and it is located midway between Port Said to the north and Suez to the south. It was the center of the Suez Canal Company for Navigation during the era of Khedive Ismail.
Moreover, due to its climate and its proximity to the governorates of Cairo, Sharqia, and also Qalyubia, the city of Ismailia is utilized as both a summer and winter resort at the same time, with numerous parks, gardens, and places designated for fishing extending across Lake Timsah, in addition to the bitter lakes in the Fayed and Abu Sultan areas.
Ismailia is one of the northern coastal governorates located in the Wadi El Tumilat and was built during the era of the New Egyptian Kingdom and continued until the time of Greek and Roman presence in Egypt. Currently, the Antiquities Authority has conducted a series of excavations in the Tel Hassan Dawood area, resulting in the discovery of many excavations dating back to pre-dynastic periods over 5000 years ago.
Ismailia also boasts a museum, one of the oldest built in Egypt, by engineers working within the international navigation company known as (Suez Canal Authority) in 1911. The museum's architectural design resembles a temple, characterized by gates and windows topped with scarabs, and it houses many artifacts from the Pharaonic era up to the time of Muhammad Ali.
Ismailia has developed with an increasing population, and a tunnel was built named after the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser, located in the heart of the city center. Additionally, a city called Al-Mostaqbal was established to accommodate the population increase, situated on the desert road. A series of large tunnels have been constructed to connect Ismailia with the Sinai Peninsula, similar to the Martyr Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel in Suez Governorate.
