Helwan is located on the banks of the Nile and is considered one of the most important ancient Egyptian cities, dating back to the Pharaonic era. It was one of the Pharaonic cities at that time. Helwan is 30 kilometers away from downtown Cairo, with a population of approximately 562,889 people according to the 2024 statistics, and it covers an area of 119.200 square kilometers.
It is bordered to the north by the Maadi district, to the south by the city of Al-Saff, to the east by the city of 15 May and Tura Mountain, and to the west by the Nile River.
There are many reasons behind the naming of Helwan. Some say it was mentioned in hieroglyphic symbols on the Rosetta Stone as "the City of the Sun and Air," and the Pharaohs called it "Ain An". The word "Ain" refers to sulfurous springs, and "An" means fish. In the Coptic language, it was called "He- wan" until it was distorted to Helwan.
Another opinion suggests that it was named Helwan because Abd al-Aziz ibn Marwan, the governor of Egypt at that time, named it Helwan as it resembles a city named Helwan in Iraq, as both are located on the banks of rivers and share a similar climate.
Helwan boasts a distinguished geographical location, as it is situated at the crossroads of desert and Nile roads. It also has a moderate climate and bright sunshine most of the year.
Helwan is famous for its sulfur springs, which have made it one of the most famous tourist cities in Egypt, as these springs have properties that cure a large number of intractable diseases such as rheumatism and some skin diseases due to the presence of sulfur content resulting from its proximity to a dormant volcano.
Additionally, Helwan is home to many archaeological sites, the most important of which are: Farouk's Corner, the Wax Museum, and the Japanese Garden. There is also the Helwan Observatory located specifically on Observatoire Street in east Helwan, established in 1903 AD on a high limestone hill. This observatory has a unique strategic location that attracts many tourists and archaeologists from different parts of the world.
Also among the most important archaeological landmarks in Helwan are the Tawfiqi Mosque, Helwan's Kbiritaj, the Helwan Cemetery, as well as Helwan Theater and the Sacred Family School. Additionally, there are some historical palaces such as Princess Khadija's Palace, Amina Hanem Ilhami's Palace, Khedive Tawfiq's Palace, and the Mother's Palace, along with several gardens including: the Sit Khadra Garden, the Palace Garden, and the October 6 Garden.
