Gerga city is one of the oldest centers of Sohag Governorate. The name Gerga goes back to the word "Gerga," which means "the estate" and has several other meanings (the village or the place or the institution).
In the era of the ancient Egyptians, Gerga was named (Gerga Mari Amun Ramses), which means (the institution of Ramses II, beloved of Amun), and there are claims that "Gergio" is the name of the sister of King Ramses II, a pharaonic princess, after which King Ramses II named the area.
However, there are sources that prove that the first name of Gerga city was "Djerga," and the names of Gerga developed through different eras, as it was called Abazo, then Touman, Djer, Dagerger, Djerja, then it was named Gerji in the Coptic era, and eventually, its name evolved to Gerga.
One of the most famous tourist attractions in Gerga is the "Al-Mahasna" area, which contains a large number of tombs dating back to the pre-dynastic period, the "Masa'id" area, which contains 70 tombs dating back to the Naqada II and III civilizations, in addition to the "Raqaqna" archaeological area, which includes a number of mastabas made of mud bricks, dating back to the third and fourth dynasties.
One of the most important pharaonic monuments in Gerga is the mastaba of King Djoser, the King of the Third Dynasty, discovered by the French Egyptologist (Auguste Mariette) by order of the French government in 1850. It contains chambers, corridors, and belongings of King Djoser.
Gerga is famous for its numerous renowned mosques, the most important of which are: the Mosque of Osman Bek, the Mosque of the Poor (Al-Zubda), built by Prince Rayan bin A'id, one of the most important Mamluk princes at the time. It was called the Al-Zubda Mosque because a market for selling butter was held in front of the mosque.
Also, the Mosque of Jalal Bek, which is distinguished by its unique location overlooking Sidi Jalal Street and Al-Qaisaria Street, the Chinese Mosque is one of the most important Islamic monuments in Gerga city and dates back to the Ottoman era, named as such due to the decorative Chinese tiles used to cover the qibla of the mosque and some of its walls.
Another important landmark in Gerga city is the Hammam and minaret of Ali Bek Al-Kabir, built by Prince Muhammad bin Omar bin Abdul Aziz, and later renovated and developed by the ruler of Gerga, Prince Ali Bek Al-Fikary, who named it after himself.
