"Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra" is an Egyptian city and is considered the largest city in the Gharbia Governorate, located in northern Egypt. It is also called "the center of Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra," and the word "Mahalla" means the place where one settles. Because there are other places named Mahalla, this city was described as 'Al-Kubra' (the great) because it is the most famous and largest among them.
Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra is an inland city in the Nile Delta, located in the middle between the "Rosetta Branch" and "Damietta Branch." It is also positioned centrally between the cities of "Kafr El-Sheikh," "Tanta," and "Mansoura," specifically 25 kilometers away from all of them. Additionally, it is located 110 kilometers from "Cairo" and about 120 kilometers from "Alexandria." It also houses the textile factory that employs over 27 thousand workers and staff; thus, it is renowned for this industry and its unique products.
During the Roman era, Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra was an important cultural center in the middle of the Delta. Its name changed in every era Egypt passed through before the Islamic conquest. It was called "Didousia" according to the historian Nikiou, and it was named "Dekla" in Coptic books. After the Islamic conquest of Egypt, the commander (Saaduddin Al-Ansari) named it "Mahallat Dekla" or "Mahallat Sharqiyun."
After the connection between Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra and the neighboring village "Sandfa," it was named "Mahallat Al-Kubara" due to being a place for princes, rulers, and sheikhs with power and authority. Later, its name was changed to Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra.
It also witnessed many political events and popular demonstrations. In 2006, more than 15 thousand people protested due to the offensive cartoons of the Prophet published by the Jyllands-Posten newspaper. Workers at the textile factory also went on strike because of the poor living conditions, and in 2008, another strike occurred due to inflation and corruption, leading to clashes between security forces and the people. Moreover, it was a significant turning point in the lives of Egyptians to overthrow the Mubarak regime, as it was announced that the people declared independence from the Egyptian government, and protesters stormed the city council and decided to replace it with a popular revolutionary council.
