Desouk city was given the nickname "Bride of the Nile," and it is located in Kafr El Sheikh Governorate in the northern Delta opposite the Rosetta branch. It is the capital of Desouk District, covering an area of 11.76 square kilometers, and has a population of approximately 135,725 residents. It is situated 167 kilometers from Cairo Governorate and 85 kilometers from Alexandria Governorate.
In ancient times, it was called "Be Dib," then the Ptolemies named it "Butosus." Later, the Romans called it "Butos," and during the Coptic era, it was named "Buto," which the Arabs modified to "Ipto."
As for its name Desouk, the word Desouk is an Arabic word derived from "Desq," meaning (the filling of the basin with water until it overflows). The name dates back to the Islamic conquest when the city of Desouk, characterized by its low land near the Nile River, would flood and its land would fill with water. After the floodwaters receded, water remained in basins, a condition that the Arabs called "Desq," hence the name Desouk.
The city is famous for containing a large number of archaeological sites recognized worldwide. Among the most famous of these landmarks is the city of Buto, which was the capital of the Northern Kingdom before King Menes united the northern and southern kingdoms. Additionally, it features the Ibrahim El-Desouki Mosque, which attracts millions of visitors annually. The city also contains a large number of shrines and Sufi sites such as the shrine of Jalal al-Din al-Kurki, the shrine of Muhammad Abu Qiratain, the shrine of Muhammad Abu al-Nasr, and many others.
Desouk includes an institute considered one of the oldest Al-Azhar institutes in Egypt, the Desouk Azhar Religious Institute, and it holds a significant religious status, especially among the Sufi community, as it is the birthplace of Ibrahim El-Desouki, the leader of Sufism and the last of its poles.
Desouk is renowned as one of the most important regional tourist cities, offering religious, recreational, and Nile tourism. It also houses an important Coptic shrine, the Church of Saint George, built in 1919 AD by a royal decree from Sultan Fuad I. It is worth noting that this church belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Church.
The city also includes some archaeological pieces dating back to the pre-dynastic era, such as the Hibat Tablet, the Falcon Horus Statue, the Statue of the Goddess Sekhmet and King Ramses II, and the Wadjet Temple.
Moreover, it features several recreational gardens such as Safa Garden, Paradise Garden, Teachers' Club Garden, the Ibrahimic Square Garden located in front of Sidi Ibrahim El-Desouki Mosque, Umm Al-Qura Garden, Family and Child Garden, and many other gardens.
