Damietta city is the capital of Damietta Governorate, located in northern Egypt, and boasts an attractive strategic location, as the city overlooks important water bodies such as Lake Manzala, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Damietta branch, one of the Nile River's branches that flows into the Mediterranean Sea at Ras El Bar area. The city also overlooks the plains and farms of the Nile Delta to the south.
The city has several ports that receive a large number of goods and ships throughout the year, in addition to exporting Egyptian products such as palm trees to various countries like China and Greece. Damietta has more than two and a half million palm trees. The city also excels in agricultural activities, especially guava farms, and various industrial activities, particularly furniture manufacturing, commonly known as Damietta furniture.
Damietta spans an area of 910.26 square kilometers. It is composed of five centers: Faraskur, Kafr Saad, Damietta, Zarqa, and Kafr El Batikh, which are further divided into ten cities. Damietta has a distinctive emblem featuring a boat with two sails, symbolizing that Damietta is a coastal governorate and indicating the unity and solidarity among fishermen. Its national day falls on the eighth of May, commemorating the resistance and sacrifice of Damietta's people against the Crusades in 1250 AD.
Damietta also has many historical monuments bearing witness to the greatness of Egyptian civilization from the era of the ancient Egyptians until now. The city was once called Damiatio, meaning port residents, which later became Tamyt in the Coptic era. During the Greek era, commercial relations were strengthened between Damietta and Greek cities, and many Greek scholars and writers interested in studying ancient Egyptian history resided in the city.
In the Roman era, the city was named Tamiat, meaning the northern land producing flax. Churches became widespread in Damietta after the introduction of Christianity to Egypt, such as the Church of the Virgin Mary, formerly known as the Church of the Visit. Significant historical sites in Damietta include Tell El-Deir, Tell El-Barrashia ruins, the Mosque and Shrine of Shetta, the Tabia Arabi in Azbet El-Borg. Notable historical landmarks include the Bahr Mosque, one of the most famous mosques in the city. The city also features tourist spots for recreation, such as the Lisan area, and natural therapy areas like Jorbi, known for its dry sands rich in thorium, beneficial for treating rheumatism.
