Al-Qatif is a governorate among the governorates in the Kingdom, specifically in the Eastern Province, and overlooks the western bank of the Arabian Gulf. It is a coastal oasis available with many dates, fruits, and fish, and it became famous through the pearl trade extracted by the Japanese. Al-Qatif is considered one of the oldest inhabited areas in the entire Arabian Gulf, with its history dating back to the fifth millennium BC. Its land witnessed the presence of many nations. Its population is around (552,442) people, and its economy relies on oil, producing about 800 thousand barrels per day. It contains three cities: Qatif, Seihat, and Safwa.
In the past, it was known as Al-Furda or the Castle City due to its strong fortification. The Qatif Castle was established on the ruins of a previous city called Al-Khatt, which was founded by Ardashir bin Babak in the third century. Later, it was annexed by King Abdulaziz to the Saudi state in 1913 AD.
The region also contains many different archeological remains, the most famous of which are:
The artifacts of the Barbar period, discovered by the Danish archaeological expedition. They discovered a group of buildings consisting of about four residential layers with walls made of square stone blocks. The expedition also found a deep water well with fresh water, leading to a large, wide basin filled with many natural stones. In addition, there were pottery shards found on the surface of Tarut Hill. Studies indicated that the pottery belongs to a civilization called Barbar, which existed around 3000 BC. All the fossils in the lower layers indicated that the pottery forms there belong to a period possibly even older than the Barbar era.
The region is also oil-rich, extending from north to south and known as the Qatif Field. It is famous for its numerous groundwater springs and layers that store water. There are more than 150 springs, and some estimate their number to be more than 350, distributed among many cities and villages. Some have diminished and dried up due to continuous extraction.
