Al-Qassim is one of the Saudi cities located in the center of the Kingdom on the caravan route that connects Mecca with Mesopotamia. It is bordered by Hail to the north and northwest, Sar and Al-Washm in Riyadh to the south, Medina and Hail to the west, and the Eastern Province to the east.
The Emir of Al-Qassim is Prince Faisal bin Mishaal Al Saud. Al-Qassim covers an area of approximately 73,000 square kilometers. According to the Kingdom's population census for the year 2022, the population of Al-Qassim reached 1,336,179 people.
The name Al-Qassim comes from the Arabic word "al-Qaseema," which means an easy land with many trees. According to "Al-Sihah," it means "a sand that grows Al-Ghaddha trees." Abu Hanifa al-Dinawari also mentioned that it means "a dense forest of Al-Ghaddha trees".
Al-Qassim is known for its many antiquities and historical sites, the most important of which are: Al-Shananeh Tower, Al-Suwaylim Mansion, which is an ancient palace built by the former Emir of Al-Bukairiyah, Abdullah Al-Suwaylim, the Heritage Village of Al-Khubra, next to Al-Nasla Rock located in Oyoun Al-Jawa, and the Mudhayneb Village, which contains 384 mud houses and 40 commercial shops.
In addition, Al-Qassim includes Ibrahim Pasha's tunnel, which was built by Ibrahim Pasha's soldiers during the siege of Al-Rass. There is also Udhla Palace, which covers an area of about 1,300 square meters, next to Al-Bassam Palace, which is a mud palace with unique architectural design located in Unayzah. Lastly, there is Al-Masoukaf traditional market in Unayzah as well, comprising 51 shops and featuring display yards and traditional councils.
Al-Qassim is characterized by a large number of oases where many palm trees are cultivated, thus producing the finest types of dates. It also offers various types of fruits and vegetables irrigated with groundwater.
Al-Qassim is also famous for hosting a large number of festivals, such as: Buraidah Date Festival, celebrating the date harvest held in August every year, the Kleeja Festival, which is one of the largest festivals showcasing popular dishes, in addition to the Pomegranate Festival, which features high-quality pomegranate crops and is held in the Al-Shihiyah center in Al-Bukairiyah governorate in Al-Qassim, and finally the Grape Festival held in Al-Bisaitin center in Al-Qassim, displaying the good varieties of grapes.
Al-Qassim is also known for its vast number of parks and recreational places, such as Al-Montazah Park, the Recreational Games Park, Mudhayneb City's waterfalls and park, Ashrafiyyah Park, and the East Al-Qusour Parks, alongside King Fahd Park. There are also some desert parks like Nafud Al-Hadiyah, Al-Shaqiqah, and Al-Mustawaa, among others.
