The lake is an Egyptian governorate with its capital in Damanhour, located in the west of the delta, bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea, to the east by Kafr El Sheikh, Gharbia, and Menoufia governorates, to the west by Alexandria and Matrouh, and to the south by Giza.
Its area is about 9,826 km², and one of its most important archaeological landmarks is the Citadel of Qaitbay, located on the western shore of the Nile in the Rashid area. It was built by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay in the late Mamluk era. It was an independent building that reached about 60 meters in length and 50 meters in width, with walls 4.5 meters thick.
Rashid Museum is built in one of the historical houses in the city of Rashid, dating back to the first half of the 18th century with 4 floors. Additionally, Al-Masili house was built by Osman Al-Tobji in 1213 to be a model of Islamic architecture through a collection of distinctive Arabic inscriptions dating back to the Mamluk period.
There is also a memorial plaque, which is a document for the digging of the Mahmoudiya Canal in Turkish and translated into Arabic. It was originally in the Great Mosque in Mahmoudiya and was moved to be at the mouth of the canal.
In addition, the governorate has the Wadi El-Natrun Monastery, which houses the tombs of the Orthodox patriarchs, and King Farouk’s palace in Edko, which is currently the headquarters of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Damanhour University.
The governorate also includes hills with many artifacts, the most famous of which is Tell Kom Tekala, south of Al-Saawi village and north of Abu Homs center.
Some of the most notable figures from Al-Buhayra governorate include Ahmed Al-Damanhouri, a former Sheikh of Al-Azhar, and Ahmed Zewail, the Nobel Prize-winning chemist, as well as the poet Ahmed Moharram. The folk hero Adham Al-Sharqawi, the great writer Tawfiq Al-Hakim, and Hassan Abu Saada, commander of the battalion that captured Colonel Yaguri, commander of the 190th Israeli Brigade during the October 1973 war, are also famous figures.
Other notable figures include Samir Radwan, a former Minister of Finance, Shawki Ibrahim, the Mufti of the Egyptian Republic, and the famous artists Abdelaziz Makhyoun and Abdel Moneim El-Hosseini, the journalist and writer, and Abdul Wahhab El-Messiri, the thinker and sociologist, as well as the actresses Abla Kamel and Afaf Shoaib.
