Al-Ahsa is considered a governorate within the governorates of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, located in the Eastern Province, about 328 km away from Riyadh. Its area reaches about 379,000 km², approximately 18% of Saudi Arabia's territories are inhabited, and it has the cities of Al-Hofuf and Al-Mubarraz, among the ten largest cities in the Kingdom.
Its population reaches about 1,104,267 people.
As for the geological composition of the city, it consists of the region
of the Arabian Shield, which includes all the eastern coastal areas by the Red Sea, extending inward to form what is called the Greater Najd Plateau. It is composed of a group of metamorphic sedimentary rocks along with a group of gneiss rocks and volcanic rocks that date back to the Precambrian era.
In addition to the presence of the Arabian Platform, which consists of a group of sedimentary rocks formed in two cycles of earth movements that created mountains, causing the fracturing of the Arabian Shield, and the eruption of all granite rocks.
Due to its location, it includes a diverse collection of layers from the upper Miocene epoch and the lower Pliocene epoch, with all upper layers clearly exposed in the cliffs towards the east near the Al-Ahsa area.
This series is called Al-Hofuf in addition to the presence of a collection of terrestrial deposits forming a group of marine layers visible in the cliffs of the Al-Summan Plateau.
As for the museums or cultural associations in Al-Ahsa, there is an archaeological and heritage museum located in the center of Al-Hofuf with an area of about four thousand m², and it includes various artifacts from each era that originated in Al-Ahsa, amounting to about 1,400 pieces, dating back about 5,000 years BC.
Additionally, there are multiple artifacts from different time periods, dating back to the Stone Age in Ein Qanas and Al-Dosariyah, which is the oldest museum in the Kingdom, opened in 1983.
There is also the Al-Ahsa Museum in the Al-Salihiyah neighborhood, displaying the history of the region through all historical ages with popular heritage artifacts, along with a library and a photo gallery, and wings to display all the artifacts.
