Abqaiq is considered the administrative capital of the Abqaiq Governorate in the Eastern Province, covering around 320 km². Additionally, before the discovery of oil, Abqaiq was called Baala Abou Al-Qadaan, and after the oil discovery by Aramco, it was named Abqaiq.
It is about 75 km south of Dammam and is one of the important cities in the region due to its location between Dammam and Al-Ahsa, with a major site for all oil company operations.
However, in the past, the city did not hold significance until the discovery of a large oil field in 1940. Therefore, Aramco officials planned for the area to be the headquarters for all company workers.
It contains the largest oil fields, with an initial production of about 9,720 barrels per day. It is around 27 km from the Arabian Gulf and is also affiliated with Aramco, which provided many necessary supplies for comfort and entertainment.
It also has a station for the railway, with trains connecting Dammam to Riyadh, passing through Abqaiq and Al-Ahsa. Additionally, there is a government hospital with 30 beds, along with two government clinics, and three other private clinics.
Regarding education, there are many schools designated for boys from elementary to secondary levels within the city, in addition to an educational supervision center with a public library that opened in the Eastern Province. There are also schools for girls from elementary to secondary levels, as well as a women's educational supervision center, two schools for memorizing the Quran from elementary to middle school levels, and schools for combating illiteracy for both males and females.
It also has a market called Souq Abu Mia, in addition to the Friday market which starts after prayer and continues until Saturday. The market is located behind Bqaiq Secondary School, next to modern markets like Panda Market and Abqaiq Mall. There's also a project to build a sports city named after Prince Abdul Mohsen, the former Emir of the Eastern Province.
