Abha is considered the administrative center and the capital of Asir in the southwest of Saudi Arabia, and thus it is its most important city. It houses the emirate's headquarters and all branches of the ministries. Geographically, it is located on the Hijaz Mountains and is adjacent to Khamis Mushait to the northeast, Al-Namas to the northwest, and Mahayil Asir to the west. It is considered one of the most important tourist resorts in Saudi Arabia due to its moderate climate and elevation above sea level. For this reason, it is called the "Bride of the Mountain."
Regarding education, King Khalid University was opened in 1419 AH, and it includes about 52 colleges with scientific and literary specializations. This university is one of the largest Saudi universities in terms of students and affiliates, with around 85,000 students.
Additionally, there are many technical colleges such as Al-Faisal University, Prince Sultan College, and
a variety of institutes affiliated with the private sector. There are also a group of archaeological landmarks that serve as tourist attractions. The most famous landmarks include the historic castles spread throughout the city, such as Abu Khayal Castle, Shamsan Castle, and the historic Al-Dagal Castle.
There are also several historical places, such as the Almaa Heritage Museum, Al-Miftaha Village, and King Fahd Cultural Center. Additionally, there are the archaeological palaces of Al-Malha and Shada, alongside various popular markets, the most famous being the Tuesday Market, followed by Al-Yazid Square, the Saturday Market in Bani Razam, and the Friday Market in Al-Wadain, which contains many artifacts, souvenirs, and traditional costumes.
In Abha also lies the village of Al-Soudah and within it, Mount Al-Soudah, which is the highest mountain peak in Saudi Arabia, reaching an elevation of 3,000 meters. The mountains are covered with juniper trees and are a suitable location for hosting paragliding competitions. Competitors and tourists come from all over each year to watch, enjoy the natural scenery, and see the rare plants and trees.
